Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America

The Assembly of Muslim Jurists of America (AMJA) is an Islamic legal forum made up of Ph.D. holders in Islamic Shariah, specializing in issuing fatwas. It serves as a neutral platform for scholars and experts from various fields to collaborate on Islamic issues. AMJA combines expertise in Shariah with a deep understanding of modern issues, relying on professionals in areas like medicine, law, and economics to inform its fatwas. It has a permanent fatwa committee in the U.S. and a network of global consultants.

In March 2025, after reviewing the operations of UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund, AMJA issued a fatwa deeming it permissible for Muslims to donate Zakat to UNHCR. AMJA outlined several conditions to ensure compliance with Shariah law and commended UNHCR for its existing policy of ensuring that 100% of the funds received go directly to Zakat-eligible beneficiaries.
