As an Islamic Philanthropy officer at UNHCR, I recently had the opportunity to visit the Kutupalong refugee camp in Bangladesh, the largest in the world, to ensure the compliance of UNHCR’s Zakat distribution activities. It was a humbling and emotional experience, one that left a deep impression on me. The Rohingya refugees I met had endured so much, and it was hard hearing the terrible stories of their displacement journeys. Despite all of this suffering, they still managed to smile and welcome us with open hearts. 

UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund is making a significant impact on their lives. I was able to witness the impact of your Zakat firsthand during this visit to the refugee camp, through the distribution of shelter kits that are owned by beneficiaries and protect them from the monsoon season.

Tragically, three weeks after my visit, a massive and devastating fire in the Kutupalong refugee camp destroyed some 3,000 shelters and rendered some 16,000 people homeless, intensifying the immense suffering of Rohingya refugees who have again lost their homes, their belongings and may face additional trauma.  

Hence, as we approach Ramadan, please don’t give up on Rohingya refugees. UNHCR’s Refugee Zakat Fund is compliant. They are eligible. Donate your Zakat with confidence.
